The inscription you are looking for does not exist. Please check the inscription number and try again. If that does not solve the problem, one of the following things has probably happened:

  • This inscription does not exist yet: there are approximately 200 unpublished inscriptions that we hope to add to this corpus in a second edition in 2008. These texts have not yet been assigned numbers, and so you should not have been able to link to them, but you never know.
  • This inscription no longer exists: this shouldn't occur, but stranger things have happened. If this is the case please let us know at our contact address so that it can be reported in the corrigenda to this site.
  • This inscription never has and never will exist: someone somewhere has just entered a number for a non-existent inscription. See below.
  • This inscription exists, but you have entered the number in the wrong format: this is easy to do. Our apologies, and let me explain how the numbering works. The number you see at the top of each inscription, and in the indices, cross-references, etc. (and the number you will type into the "Go to inscription" box on every page in this site) is made up of two parts separated by a period (or full stop, punkt, point, etc., depending on your choice of native tongue). The part on the left (a number between 1 and 15) is the chapter number corresponding to the location of the inscription; the part on the right (a one- to four-digit number) is the number of the inscription within the chapter. These numbers are not necessarily sequential, so simply adding one to the previous number will not necessarily take you to the next inscription. The number you will see in the URL and the filename of the XML file, however, is a six-digit number, probably containing several zeroes in various places. The first two digits correspond to the nember to the left of the period, padded with a zero if necessary; the last four digits correspond to the number to the right of the period, padded with up to three zeroes if necessary. 1.1 in the index, for example, becomes 010001 in the URL. All clear?
