Apparatus

The supplements, where not self evident, are based on the text of 13.5 (=MAMA 482) which honours this honorand's brother.

l. 5, [?Γάϊον], MAMA, without justification; since nothing is needed and a vacat seems more probable (giving prominence to the honorand's name).

l. 11, Reinach gives nothing after λι/τουργίας, did not see that his b. l. 1 fits here and proposed for his b. l. 2, [συνεκτικ]ότος [τὴν πόλιν], wrongly.

ll. 12, 13, [ὑπὲρ τῆς | π]α̣τ̣[ρίδος], MAMA, wrongly.

ll. 15/16, [?πρὸ μοῖρας], Reinach, but 13.5 (=MAMA 482) l. 15 suggests differently.

l. 22/23, τὴν [δὲ]|·· c. 4 ··]ν ταύτην, Reinach.

Translation:

The Council and the People and the Gerousia honoured with the first and greatest honours Pyrrhos Papias son of Pyrrhos the son of Zenon son of Pyrrhos, of a first and honoured family and one which has undertaken the most important liturgies. He lived as a boy discreetly, and died while still a youth; his whole property came to the People to provide gymnasiarchies and stephanephoriates in perpetuity in accordance with the existing will of his father. This monument was set up by Tation daughter of Menippos son of Menippos, fourth of that name from Demetrios, his mother.

Commentary:

It is now clear that two brothers were honoured, here and in 13.5 (=MAMA 482), in very much the same terms and perhaps left their property to the city for similar purposes. There is an initial problem that if the family connections are correctly interpreted both this man and his father (13.7)had the second name Papias. The normal practice seems to have been for the son to take a second name when his first was the same as that of a living father (or, perhaps grandfather); for both to have two names in common seems likely to increase the chances of confusion. Reinach observed that in our inscriptions the father was not always given the second name (not in fact in this text where the son has it, although he has it in his own text and in that of the other son Demetrios). It is not impossible that there has been a mason's error in this text.

Nothing is known at present of the mother's family.

For comment on the family and the funding see on 13.7 (=CIG 2775).
