Notis Toufexis and David Holden, Building a database for the compilation of the Grammar of Medieval Greek

The Grammar of Medieval Greek project at the University of Cambridge is developing a database system based on a relational model in which both the management of bibliographical entries of all kinds and the actual language description (the collection of excerpts from identified sources and their linguistic labelling) are integrated. This database is primarily being used for the compilation of a comprehensive Grammar of Medieval Greek in book form. The actual database system will be presented together with a brief discussion of methodological issues concerning Medieval Greek textual data and their implications for database design. The presentation will close with a short (exploratory) statement about the theoretical problems of converting the future Grammar of Medieval Greek into machine readable format.
