5.2. Column dedication to Demos by Artemon son of Adrastos

Description:: Four blue marble columns; i. Broken above and below (0.48); ii. Broken above, moulding survives below (H. c. 0.83); surface damaged. iii. Fragment broken on all sides (W. 0.40 × H. 0.355); iv. broken column drum of blueish white marble (0.46; total height not reliably measurable).
Text:: ii. Inscribed just above (c. 0.07) moulding; iv. inscribed at about 1.60 from base of column.
Letters:: Neat capitals with restrained seriphs, c. 0.03.
Date:: Second century A.D. (monument, lettering)
Findspot:: i : South Agora, north portico; ii and iii: Hadrianic Baths, 'Salle au vingt colonnes'; iv Tetrastoon, reused in the south colonnade.
Original Location:: , on the north side of the 'Salle au vingt colonnes', at the south east corner of the east court of the Hadrianic baths.
Last recorded location:: i and iii, Museum; ii and iv, Findspot.
History of discovery:: The text informs us that there were originally 6 columns, presumably each bearing the same text; Mendel copied ii and cited i (notebook A 7, a; C, 9); all four recorded by the NYU expedition: i in 1985, ii and iii in 1988 (88.18), iv in 1978 (Theatre 20).

Translation:

Artemon son of Adrastos the son of Dionysios the son of Dinomachos dedicated the six columns at his own expense to the People, with their capitals

Commentary:
