I have been desired by the Council of the Royal Society of Literature to transmit to you the inclosed transcripts of some Inscriptions of Aphrodisias, which were copied by Mr. J. P. Deering in the ruins of that city in the year 1813. In the Volume of the transactions of the Society recently published, you will see the motives of

this mark of respect towards you, and it will be my study to cause it to be repeated, whenever the occasion shall recur.
Permit me to offer some observations which have occured to me in perusing with the accustomed pleasure and instruction your new fasciculus, which has very lately reached me, of the Corpus Inscriptionum Graecorum. 2151 d. (II p. 1018) is complete according to Mr. Finley, and exhibits no marks of being a fragment. Dryo is the name of a modern village in Euboea near where

the Inscription was found. ΔΡΥΕΥΣ therefore appears to be the gentile of a Dryum or Dryo, an Euboean town or demus, which occurs not in history.
Of 3438, it is said in the C.I.G. "minusculis edidit Keppel cum translatione Leakii". But this does not exactly express the meaning of Keppel, who says that for the text in minuscula of all the inscriptions as well as for the translations and notes accompanying them he was "endebted to Colonel Leake".
