Translation:
Menippos Kodios and Papianos Kodios, sons of Athenagoras the son of Menippos dedicated the four columns with their tori and capitals to the Demos from their own funds.
Commentary:
One of the column base dedications from the west portico of the East Court of the Hadrianic Baths. From north section: 5.206 (=MiItal 8 i and ii), 5.201 (=Haussoullier 1), (unpublished) (=Boulanger A 73, no.11); from the south section (unpublished) (=Boulanger B, 21 no.28).
Speira is a standard term for the rounded moulding (torus) in the base of an Ionic or Corinthian column: IG I2 372.64; Sardis 7(1) no 181, Poll. 7.121, Vitruvius 3.5.3., 5.202 (=Museum 154), (unpublished) (=Museum 158); cf also (unpublished) (=68.272).
