Description:
The right side and lower edge of a white marble panel-stele without raised moulding (H. 0.44 x W. 0.325 x D. 0.165). The relief shows the lower part, from the chest downwards, of a gladiator (a retiarius) wearing body armour, with bare legs, advancing to his left; he holds a short sword in his right hand and the staff of a trident (whose head is lost) in his left.

Apparatus

The number might possibly be a gamma, but is far more easily read as eta.

Translation:

[.....] Pheropes of brigade 8 (?).

Commentary:

Although there is room for a longer name, this is probably a version of the attested Φέροψ (Robert, Gladiateurs, 300; see also BullÉp 1966.256, from A. Balkanska, Archeologia 7 (1965), 32-5). See further PPA ad loc.
