Description

  • Monument: Upper right corner of a white marble funerary stele (0.43 x 0.47 x 0.10) in the form of an aedicula, with simply moulded gable and plain acroteria, supported on columns with Corinthian capitals. Within the recess is the bust of a boy in relief.
  • Text: ii is cut on either side of the bust and is presumably the original inscription of the monument; i is cut in irregular lettering on the gable.
  • Letters: i: 0.01-0.02; square sigma and cursive omega; ii: in standard second- or third-century lettering, 0.02-0.025.
  • Date: i: Third/fourth century (formulae, penalty); ii Second/third century (lettering)

Translation

a. [?The memorial belongs to ?Eu]arestus son of Acheus, in which my children [will be buried, but no-one] else [is allowed]; anyone who dares [to bury anyone in it, let him give] to the most sacred treasury a pound of pure bullion.

b. [Here] lies [... c. 4 ...]?tavern-keeper[...]
